I love the Sound of Music and delight when the networks run it during the holiday season. I don’t generally have time to watch the lengthy film, but I will throw it on as I wrap or bake and catch a few tunes.
Favorite Things is obviously the best.
Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens …
These sweet, simple pleasures bring smiles to our faces.
But given I’m a California girl and reside in a desert, my “favorite things” are a little different. I rarely need mittens and these days we see no rain. We’re in major droughtsville!
So where do I turn for life’s little delights … well, these are a few of my favorite things.
Oh, and feel free to sing along.
Sweet-smelling candles and Starbucks refreshers
Magazines and Amazon and chocolate simple pleasures
Yoga sweat sessions that loosen my limbs
These are a few of my favorite things.
Colored fine-tipped markers and fresh luscious flowers
Candy corn and pedicures and sleeping for hours
Quiet time and family time and walks with my dog
And perhaps a few moments to write on my blog.
When the traffic sucks and when the meetings muck and I’m feeling sad.
I think of a few of my favorite things, and then I don’t feel soooo bad.
Ok, I’m no songwriter, but I’ve figured out I need to find my own joy. I need to make my own happy moments. I need to treat myself, and I need to surround myself with people who care and who are rooting me on.
Yes, I look forward to vacations and date nights and concerts, but when it comes to the day-to-day grind, I need to create my own happy, and the things mentioned above usually do the trick.
I have a zillion more (lotions, cool journals, flip-flops, hikes in nature, the sound of ocean waves), but I ran out of steam on the whole lyrics approach.
What are a few of your favorite things?
