Last week was rough. The gym was closed due to a mold infestation, my five-year-old daughter nearly destroyed me one morning over her indecision around a water bottle (major tantrum), and a work project failed to come together. Throw in a crap-load of back-to-school forms (why does mom always get stuck with these?), some unexpected bills and very toasty California temps and I could feel myself wearing thin.
But we survived. I survived. I lived to see another week.
By Friday I was fantasizing about a much-needed vacation, but we all know vacations are few and far between. So long ago I learned to turn to plan B – treat myself to small pleasures and quick moments to recharge.
As moms, we often joke about our Target visits and hiding away in the bathroom to enjoy some alone time. With three young kids and a full-time job, I’ll take it. Yes, I long for spa days and weekend getaways and hours of uninterrupted “me time,” but I need to be realistic. I should plan for these things, but I need to feed my sanity and soul in spurts.
I light a candle and enjoy a beautiful scent.
I rub some lavender oil on my wrists.
I sip a Starbucks refresher.
I walk my dog and listen to some chill music.
I watch The Real Housewives of OC.
I flip through a magazine for a few minutes.
I scroll Instagram and look at fabulous pics.
I read a few pages on my Kindle.
I wish I could spend a day doing all of these things, but I take what I can get. These are all relatively easy things I can do on any given day of the week at almost any hour. I give myself 10 minutes – on good days 30 – and I simply chill. In the future, there will be more “free time,” but until then, I enjoy my work, my husband, my crazy kids and the few simple pleasures I can give myself to recharge and quiet the chaos.
What are your simple pleasures?
How do you treat yourself in those quick moments between work, kids, dinner, and everything else you do?
